We offer a variety of appointments. We have normal routine appointments that can be booked in advance with a Doctor of your choice but you will have to wait longer for these appointments (2-3 weeks).
You can book routine appointments up to four weeks in advance.
Appointments are 10 minutes long and are for one problem only. Please book a double appointment or further appointments if you have more than one problem to discuss.
We are also able to offer emergency appointments on the same day. These will be booked with the duty team and you will be seen by either a duty doctor or the nurse practitioner.
Online Appointment Booking
You are now able to book and cancel GP appointments online. Not all appointments are made available in this manner, but it can be quicker and easier than telephoning, also there will be several appointments available, thus enabling you to select the most appropriate date and time to fit in with your diary committments. Please collect an Application Form from Reception to register for this service.
Once registered, you will receive, via post, information that will enable you to create your username and password. When your account has been activated, you will be able to book and cancel GP appointments, also this service can be used to request your repeat medications (please refer to the Prescriptions section for further detail).
Please note, this online service is available to over 16’s only at present.
Also, only one email account can be used for each patient registering. Two patients cannot use the same email address for this service, as it is unique to the individual patient.
Once registered, our online service is available at: www.patient.co.uk/access
There is a free patient access app that provides a greater convenience for those away from a laptop or PC if they have access to a smartphone. It can be found at the app store (Iphone) or the Play store (Android)
We offer a text messaging service to remind you of your appointment date – reminder text messages are sent for extended appointments only at this time. If you wish to sign up for this service, please visit the ‘Text Message Reminders’ section under Further Information, to the right hand side of the screen, or ask at Reception for an application form. Within the text message reminder service, an option is included to allow appointment cancellation by return text should you need to do so. Also, should you wish to no longer receive text message reminders, there is an option to stop the service at any time. Please remember to keep us informed of your current contact details. A Change of Patient Details form is available from Reception. Please note, while the Practice will not transmit any information via text message which would enable an individual patient to be identified, it is your responsibility to ensure that the Practice is advised immediately should you change your mobile telephone number or if it is no longer in your possession.
In the month of September there were 277 appointments missed through non-attendance at the surgery which has an impact on appointments available.
If you are unable to make your allocated appointment, please cancel and we can then offer the time to someone else.
Please telephone the surgery to request a doctor’s visit (if possible before 10.30 am for non urgent visits). Please give our receptionist as much information as possible to ensure that urgent visits are given the priority they deserve.
Children and babies who are ill can usually be brought safely to the surgery by car.
Potentially infectious cases can be isolated at the surgery. Home visits are only available for patients who are housebound because of an illness or disability.
Visits are carried out at the discretion of the doctor. You may be called by a doctor before they visit so that the doctor can find out as much information as possible before they do the visit.
Patients are asked to attend the surgery whenever possible as the facilities and equipment at the surgery are better for examining and treating patients.
If you would like some urgent advice from a doctor by telephone, please call before midday. The duty doctor will then call you back when he or she is free.
Please note that calls may be returned at any time from 8am onwards. Please ensure that you remain available at the number given to take the call. For your information, calls from the surgery will be identified as an ‘unknown number’.
The HUB – GP/Nurse Appointments
You may have heard us talk about appointment at the HUB if you have called for an appointment at the surgery.
What is this?
Southampton GPs introduced a new initiative a little while ago now to provide patients access to medical help from 8am to 8pm every weekday (including bank holidays) and 8am to 4pm on Saturday and 8am to 2pm on Sunday.
Southampton Primary Care Ltd (which is owned by all Southampton GP practices) has been set up to provide these appointments at ‘THE HUB’ and is an important part of the practices’ resource to help provide appointments to our patient population. You will be asked for permission to share your medical record with the person seeing you to ensure they can view your usual medication and possible allergies etc.
Who can use these appointments?
As a registered patient at Chessel Practice, we can book an appointment with a doctor or nurse for you. You may find it more convenient to ask for a HUB appointment, especially if you work or can only see a GP or nurse at the weekend.
Where are these HUBS?
There are six HUBS throughout the city (see below) who offer these appointments but we cannot guarantee which one will have free appointments on any particular day. Please be aware that you may have to visit one which may be slightly further away from your local surgery.
Shirley Health Partnership, Shirley Health Centre, Grove Road, Southampton SO15 3UA
Aldermoor Surgery, Aldermoor Close, Southampton SO16 5ST
St. Mary’s Surgery, 1 Johnson Street, Southampton SO14 1LT

Chessel Practice, 4 Chessel Avenue, Bitterne, Southampton, SO19 4AA
Portswood Solent Surgery, 7 Belmont Road, Portswood, Southampton, SO17 2GD
How do I book an appointment at The Hub?
Our reception staff can book these for you; call the surgery on 02380 447777. Also if you phone NHS 111 (when we are closed), then you could be offered a HUB appointment if you need to be seen by a GP or nurse on that day. Remember calling NHS 111 is free to phone and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so you may not need to wait until 8am on Monday morning if you are needing medical attention over the weekend.
